Seven Sisters Place, Sukkur

Posted in : Museums / Monuments / Others, Sindh, Sukkur

(added few years ago!)

Sat bahan jo asthan or Satbahain jo maskan is the resting or ‘living’ place of Seven Sisters.
It is situated in Sukkur on a mound near Landsowne Bridge.

Popularly known as Satian jo asthaan (the home of seven virgins) is a cave like hall, dug out of the mound.
It is a strange place. No impressive mausoleum like those of other saints of Sindh, but just an empty cave.

There are no graves, no epithaps, no inscriptions, no engravings, just some prayer mats and copies of the Holy Quran. This is how the cave was, a secluded hiding place, when the ‘Seven Virgins’ took shelter here to save their honor from drunken soldiers. It is a female only shrine, no males are allowed inside.

The most commonly accepted version of seven sisters’ story is

“These were seven pious women, probably of Arab origin. They came to Sindh, along with a caravan of Arab traders during the reign of Raja Dahir. They had camped on the hillock, rising out of River Indus. Their camp was attacked by soldiers of Raja Dahir with the evil intention of dishonouring them”.

One version says that to save their honour, they drowned after jumping into the River Indus.
Another version is “They took refuge in the cave. Seeing the soldiers close in on them, they beseeched Allah to protect them against the dishonour. Allah listened, and the “hillock” caved in on them burying them alive

Historical Graveyard, Sukkur

Posted in : Archaeological Sites, Mosques / Tombs, Sindh, Sukkur

(added few years ago!)

A historic Mughal era graveyard is situated on a mound in Sukkur near Indus River Bank. These are the graves of the family of Khan Zaman Amir Abdul Qasim (Mughal Governor of Bakkhar now called Sukkur).

The Mughal architecture of graves is similar to those found in Makli, Taung Shareef. The grave of Abul Qasim is bigger than all the others.

There are inscriptions in Persian language of his lifealong with Quranic verses. On one side of the graves stands the mosque called the Jamia Akbari, named after Emperor Akbar, built in 1584. Having ravaged by the test of time and despite repeated repairs, the mosque today stands in ruins.
This scenic location & historical importance attracts a large number of tourists daily. They visit the mound and enjoy the panoramic view of River Indus from this vantage point, often staying there for picnics when the weather is good.

Nurri Lagoon, Sindh

Posted in : Lakes / Dams / Barrages / Wetlands, Sindh, Badin

(added few years ago!)

Nurri Lagoon (24° 30 N, 068°47’E) is situated 190 km southeast of Karachi in Golarchi (Badin District),
The lagoon has a covered area of 2540 hectare.
It is a natural wetland, featuring a combination of brackish coastal and inland lagoons and barren mudflats on the northern side.

This lagoon is connected with Jubho, Pateji and Cholri wetlands.

This place is home to very large concentrations of migratory birds in winter. The different bird species found in the area include storks, snipes, crested terns, ducks and gulls.

The site is not protected. Sea water intrusion and increase in water level due to tidal effect has increased salinity and sedimentation.
The wetland is under threat by over population on the dwindling natural resource base.

Increase in fishing and illegal hunting has aggravated the situation.
