The fort was constructed by the 'Mehtars' or princes of the Katoor dynasty. 

 

The ornate building up the road southwest towards the police station was the royal courthouse. The walls were once plastered, but its loss reveals the sturdy stone and 

 

wood structure beneath.

The fort is stretched on an extensive area on the bank of roaring Chitral river under the cool shadow of centure old huge trees of Chinar.
