Altit is one of the oldest settlements of Hunza valley. It is the birth place of Hunza Kingdom.

The Altit Fort was constructed by artisans from Baltistan who accompanied the wife of Mir Ayasho II during 1540s A.D.

The fort has six different stages whose construction is on natural levels of the rock.
This sheer rock cliff drops 1000 feet straight down to the Hunza River.
In Year 2011, the 900-year-old Altit Fort received Unesco Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation after its restoration by Aga Khan Cultural Services, Pakistan.
It is an important tourist attraction in Gilgit-Baltistan.
